What's the difference between Merriam Webster Dictionary and the Oxford Dictionary?

Merriam Webster is American whilst the Oxford is British.





A bit like a French Canadian dictionary versus a European French one.





I think Merriam was the person who went out of his way to remove British'isms from the American language thus simplifying some of the official spellings. The Websters then took it over when he died...or something like that.
