Which English dictionary is better: Concise Oxford or Merriam-Webster?

English is not my first language and I would like to buy a good dictionary for reference when I'm reading.Which English dictionary is better: Concise Oxford or Merriam-Webster?
They are both good, I'm sure. Your choice is probably one of dialect. The Oxford will be more British-English-oriented, and the Merriam-Webster will be more about American English, I think.

But Samuel Johnson compiled the first commonly used English dictionary, published in 1755.



So it's highly probably that Webster "found" many of his words in Johnson's dictionary. Webster can, however, take sole responsibility for many of the differences in spellings between American and British English: he just decided that he liked other spellings and altered his dictionary accordingly



As for where Johnson got his words, he and his assistants spent some nine years collecting words from hundreds of books, deciding on definitions and sorting the words into alphabetical order.

The only dictionary that would give you this - would be the PRINTED edition - online is for people only looking for a SINGLE WORD! I guess we won't be looking at books again.

There's really only one hands down authority on the English language.



It's the Oxford English Dictionary, or OED. If it's not in there, it's not in the English language or will be in the next edition.



This work is in VOLUMES like an encyclopedia, and even in microsopic edition where you need a magnifying glass to read it is 2 volumes. Of course it's not the leading seller, it is very expensive, but also the very best authority.
Oxford English Dictionary all the way! Of course, it takes up an entire shelf or two, but no more thorough dictionary in the English world!
