Question about my Merriam-Webster Spanish-English Dictionary?

I'm learning Castillan Spanish or more commonly known as Espanol. The dictionary I bought is Espanol-Ingles, but it says "as spoken by Latin-America". Is there a HUGE difference at all--that it could be hinder my learning of the language because the translations aren't exact? Just wanted reassurance. The book does only mention "includes highlights of Latin-American Spanish" So please enlighten me. Thank you. Much appreciated :]Question about my Merriam-Webster Spanish-English Dictionary?
Just because most of Latin American countries speak Spanish doesn't mean that all of them use the language in the exact same way. The same thing goes for some countries in the Caribbean and also in Spain. Mostly, the difference is based on the use of synonyms, so they are talking about the same things but they call i in a different way. Another frequent difference is "regionalisms" when even within the same country, things could be called and/or referred to using different names/words. The worst case scenario is when a commonly used word in one country, is a "bad or dirty" word in another. Other than the "bad/dirty" words, don't be concerned about the other differences because usually most people are able to recognize synonyms even if they don't use them.Question about my Merriam-Webster Spanish-English Dictionary?
So what is it, then? Did buying that certain dictionary go to waste or what?Question about my Merriam-Webster Spanish-English Dictionary?

Do you have webster's dictionary's in you home, school, office? Or all three!?

I have the Merriam-Webster 10th Collegiate dictionary; a Roget's Thesaurus; plus a hard-bound "dictionary of dictionaries" (has 30 in one book, from a regular dictionary to a medical, legal, Spanish, Latin/Greek, etc. Don't use it unless I have to, because the type font is soooooooo tiny it hurts my eyes to read it) all at home.Do you have webster's dictionary's in you home, school, office? If Merriam-Webster came to you and said, "We're writing a new dictionary and we don't know what normal means."?

Say the folks at Merriam-Webster were writing out a new dictionary, and when they got to the entry for 'normal', didn't know the meaning...so they asked you to write the entry. The criteria for this entry are as follows:

1. Must be different and distinct from other dictionary entries for the word 'normal'.

2. Cannot merely be a synonym, must take sentence form.

3. Must be a definition of what 'normal' IS, *not* what normal ISN'T (i.e. no, "we're all unique, normal is nonexistent.")

What would your dictionary entry be?If Merriam-Webster came to you and said, "We're writing a new dictionary and we don't know what normal means."?
I guess the 3...it's really hard to define i agree. What's normal today wasn't yesterday and may be tomorrow so I don't even know if there should be a word for that apart from a "narrow-minded" social context!
What is generally considered as common. The behaviour of the majority of people.

or something like that...If Merriam-Webster came to you and said, "We're writing a new dictionary and we don't know what normal means."?
a standard by which everybody is judged. what is expected. If Merriam-Webster came to you and said, "We're writing a new dictionary and we don't know what normal means."?
The most common state of an object.

The dictionary is 5 to 6 inch's thick and has an imprinted brown leater cover. I'm exactly sure what year it is printed in. My best guess is 1882. "infidel". My question is, do you consider yourself an infidel, or not? Why, or why not?Atheists, I was just thumbing throuh my Webster's New World Dictionary, and I came across the word .........?
I got my dictionary out, and sure enough, atheists are infidels. I never knew that. And, interestingly enough, the next word was "Infidelity", and the first meaning of this word is, "the fact or state of being an infidel". I never knew that either.
"Infidelity" is defined as being unfaithful to another person...

"Infidel" is a person that does not have a religion...

Have nothing to do with one another...

Atheists, I was just thumbing throuh my Webster's New World Dictionary, and I came across the word .........?
oh that's a nice dictionary.Atheists, I was just thumbing throuh my Webster's New World Dictionary, and I came across the word .........?
I just might be, but get this, even though you're a believer, a person from another religion might consider you an infidel, too.
    Was it the Christian version?
Hmm, technically we are all infidels to other deities that we do not believe in. Even you! Aren't you happy that we are all in the same boat?
i guess some people would think me an infidel. i'm not an atheist though, so you may disregard this answer.
"Infidel" is a word used by religious people to make those of other paths appear and feel like garbage. I don't consider myself an "infidel" any more or less than I consider myself a "sinner" (another word used by religion to induce low self-esteem in decent people).
Is it just me or do Christians have a big problem with people being different from them?
Infidel : a person who does not accept a particular faith

So you are an infidel to the religion you do not adhere to..... big deal.
I do, I do not accept your god, therefore I'm an infidel. You're one too. You are an infidel to most gods, therefore you are an infidel. We are all infidels.
    From this definition:

    http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionar鈥?/a>

Yes. I am not a Christian, and I don't respect or adhere to a particular religion.

Though, here's what the OED says:

----"1. One who does not believe in (what the speaker holds to be) the true religion; an 鈥榰nbeliever鈥? Obs.

----2. In specific applications: a. From a Christian point of view: An adherent of a religion opposed to Christianity; esp. a Muhammadan, a Saracen (the earliest sense in Eng.); also (more rarely), applied to a Jew, or a pagan. Now chiefly Hist."

In this case, given that the first definition is obsolete, I am not an infidel as I am not part of an oppositional religion.
    %26lt;An unbeliever with respect to a particular religion.%26gt;

I have respect towards Neo-Paganism and Wicca. Even if I don't believe in thier Gods/Goddess, I do like that they respect the earth and nature. Usually, down to earth people as well, and they typically do not try and "convert" you, or tell you you are wrong if you believe something they do not.
Well, Christian, ask a Moslem whether YOU are an infidel in his eyes.

Then look at what any religion DOES to infidels. The unspeakable things Moslems have done recently to westerners are really no different than the things the Christian church did to MY ancestors - atheists, protestants, Huguenots, and Jews.

  • If webster wrote the first dictionary... where did he find the words?

He found the words from people, who used to speak all around him. He gathered those words, and compiled his dictionary. He also referenced newspapers of the day, and used books to look into meanings and common and proper usages. If webster wrote the first dictionary... where did he find the words?
Noah Webster compiled the first dictionary of American English, the first edition of which was published in 1806.

But Samuel Johnson compiled the first commonly used English dictionary, published in 1755.

So it's highly probably that Webster "found" many of his words in Johnson's dictionary. Webster can, however, take sole responsibility for many of the differences in spellings between American and British English: he just decided that he liked other spellings and altered his dictionary accordingly

As for where Johnson got his words, he and his assistants spent some nine years collecting words from hundreds of books, deciding on definitions and sorting the words into alphabetical order.

Webster's Dictionary, where did he meanings from?

How do we know for sure its correct?Webster's Dictionary, where did he meanings from?
Lexigraphy is an art--it tracks language as it stands now--at the date of publication. Fortunately or not, language changes. There probably are some mistakes in early dictionaries. But more than mistakes, there are bound to be omissions--words and usages which are regional which fade out without ever having been tracked, or develop into formal language with the origin unknown. There would be no reason to focus on Webster. Robert Cawdrey wrote an English dictionary in 1604, which certainly predates Webster. And poor Webster has been taken in vain by hundreds of publishers churning out their own badly researched dictionaries under Webster's name.

Look under the title page of any dollar store or cheap grocery store Webster dictionaries and you're liable to find ANY publisher and no real connection to Webster.

www.gutenberg.org has a number of early dictionaries which are old and fascinating and predate "webster"Webster's Dictionary, where did he meanings from?
So why don't you look up the history of Daniel Webster who put the dictionary together.

There were other dictionaries. and the language has rules of English and grammatical usuages that he didn't invent.Webster's Dictionary, where did he meanings from?
Sorry, the lexicographer (the person who wrote the dictionary) was Noah, not Daniel. Daniel was a lawyer (The Devil and Daniel Webster), orator, statesman and politician.

Because they are not smart enough to discuss issues, so they just make up slurs.
You mean some cons?, man you are very stereotypical. You are wasting your questions. All you want is someone who agrees with you. I dont. Im not prejudiced.
All part of the noble goals of some of the right wing to completely quash all intelligent political debate by completely disrespecting people with opposing viewpoints.....
i think nancy pelosi and harry reid should call for congress to launch a full fledged investigation into this matter. did Bush know about this? is Rove behind it? was 9/11 and the Iraq War a diversion so people wouldn't pay attention to the use of this "non-word?" also, democratic congress-persons should pass a non-binding resolution against it in protest. and finally, in the name of political correctness, free speech and fairness, the term should be outlawed under penalty of death.
If you can't win an argument through logic and reason, the next best thing is shouting rhetoric while you disparage your opponent.
The popular consensus seems to be that it is a play on words, a pun, if you will. Lie-beral as in lying liberal.

It's rather juvenile, right up there with cuntservatives, libtards, repubtards, etc.
The conservatives love to insult people instead of sourcing their opinion.
Personally I don't understand why they use it either.

Terms or phrases like: Pantiwaste he-man liberal, nannyfied metro-sexual, typical/common day U.S. hypocrite, G'ore afied fancy prancer and vaginaterian usually come to mind long before anything as silly as using the worn out term neo-liberal.

"All part of the noble goals of some of the right wing to completely quash all intelligent political debate by completely disrespecting people with opposing viewpoints....."

    True.

'Tis better to balk at all the troubles our government goes through instead of actually coming up with anything worthy of leading our Country in a step in the right direction rather than learning how to be productive; as opposed to being counter-productive by wasting millions of OUR dollars each day by babbling about what each other said (as liberal politicians do regarding conservative politicians) instead of getting off the damn phones with the media and roll up their sleeves and GET BACK TO WORK DOING SOMETHING WORTH WHILE.

Like working TOGETHER as they all did after the first few months after 9/11. It was the fist time our frikking Country was actually productive in nearly 70 years.

There's a ton of conservatives just as guilty but don't have nearly as many ears to bend as the liberals due - regarding the media.

Should Webster's dictionary change the spelling of PUSSY to Floyd Mayweather Jr.?

Unless he fights Pacquiao, yes. And if the Pac fight falls through, then id like to see if Mayweather is willing to step up in weight and take on Martinez or Williams. If he fights any of the three i just mentioned within the next year (without rediculous stipulations that favor him)...he will earn alot of respect from fight fans I think. As of now he is only respected for his skill, but he'll never be compared to the Sugar Ray Robinsons, or the Rocky Marciano's of history untill he starts showing the courage to take on anyone and everyone, and let the chips fall where they may. I have more respect for someone like Roy Jones Jr., who may have lost some fights, but he never ducked anyone and he took on challengers all the way from middleweight to heavyweight to prove his strength to to the world. When 'god' is included, it is as a generic term. This means the if God is described as the supreme being, then this term applies to all religions. So the information the Christian, the Muslim, the atheist etc. gets is not specifically a religious definition, it is a generalisation for everybody. The same applies to caesar. The dictionary's job is to give us the general idea of what a 'caesar' would be in our present society. What year was the Webster鈥檚 New Collegiate Dictionary published?

Webster's 11th came out in 2003. It's the standard dictionary used by most publishing houses, including my employer, and I remember how disappointed I was when they replaced my 10th (from 1998) with the 11th. First of all, the 11th uses this new sans-serif typeface (like Arial on MS Word) that seems too childish to me. And they replaced the dust jacket with a pre-printed hardcover, like the covers of grade school textbooks. There's a CD-ROM in the back but I never use it. Maybe I'm just a curmudgeon, but there used to be a real charm in just physically handling the dictionary -- the texture of the paper, the cloth binding, the little flecks on the cut edges of the pages, the old-fashioned typeface, etc. -- and a lot of that is gone in the 11th. The good news is you can probably pick up a copy of the 10th for a great price at a used bookstore or through third-party sellers on amazon. Not sure why you want simplified if you'll be in Taiwan - since they use traditional characters. Better to learn traditional first anyway, the transition is much easier than the other way around. Your information is a bit too vague. I am uncertain as to whether you are talking about more than one book with different publication dates or a set published over several years.

Single volume copies of the 1950s publication by this publisher of Webster's Unified Dictionary and Encyclopaedia sell for about $5. It is unlikely that an earlier publication will be worth much more as the book has been reprinted frequently and this lowers the value.

The condition of the book (how close it looks to being new) and any markings or inscriptions will also affect the price

How much would a Websters New Twentieth Century Dictionary (1942) be worth? *Urgent*?

Hi i have a Websters Twentieth Century Dictionary from 1942 it is in good condition, i heard some can be worth around 100 dollars but im wondering what this one would be worth, thanks !How much would a Websters New Twentieth Century Dictionary (1942) be worth? *Urgent*?
I have a feeling it is worth almost nothing, 2 or 3 dollars at a used book store. From a collectible standpoint, here is nothing too special about a dictionary----It is not by a famous author, it is not a limited production, it is not connected with a particular historical event. Just because it is old doesn't mean it's valuable. Whenever I have something I want to know to know the value of . i look it up on EBay. Remember, now EBay isn't the abiter of pricing, but it gives a good indication. Be sure to look at what things have SOLD for, not the asking price. My advice would be to enjoy your old book, use it as it was intended, and consult it often! Don't buy antiques because you think you can make a profit, (it is a very risky game), buy them because you like them.
    G'day Makaveli,

    Thank you for your question.

I would check with an antiques dealer especially those who have some knowledge of books. I wouldn't think that a dictionary would have a particularly high value unless that it was a rare edition or had a famous owner. However, an expert would know much more than I would. Checking E-Bay might be a good first step if you find anything relevant.

RegardsHow much would a Websters New Twentieth Century Dictionary (1942) be worth? *Urgent*?
A book antiquarian will not help you, because the book must be 100 years old. Do your research on the web, like, if YOU wanted to buy one, that way you'll know how much they are worth. Is it a first edtion, first print? All that really hikes the price.

I have vintage books from the 20s', I bought them because I like books, not because of how much they are worth.

Good luck! How much would a Websters New Twentieth Century Dictionary (1942) be worth? *Urgent*?
I agree. It is too old to be very useful and too new to be a collectible. Just another second-hand book, I'm afraid.

  • If I memorize Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged, then can I win spelling bee?

I heard that was Scripp's official dictionary, so if I HAPPENED to have the time to memorize it, that would mean I would be guaranteed to win, because I know all the words on it, right?

theoretically..If I memorize Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged, then can I win spelling bee?
While memorizing the dictionary would give you an advantage, it would probably not guarantee victory.

Because no matter how expert you are on a subject, memory is not perfect. And the probability that you could forget any given word out of 400,000 is pretty high. If it happens to be the one they ask, you are standing there without a paddle.

I can't be sure, but you can begin by checking serif fonts such as Garamond, Caslon, Baskerville, Bodoni, Goudy, Times, Century, Palatino, Sabon, or Stone Serif. What font is the dictionary printed in?
That last Webster's Dictionary that I looked at in the store used a few different fonts... one for the word to be looked up, a different one for the ways the word can be used (noun, adjective, etc) and sometimes still another for sample sentences or a like word meant to be a bit separate in the write-up.

I think I would turn to Google or Wikipedia to search for a possible answer, but I do think you'll find the book uses more than one font.

Can someone clarify to me what this definition of PREMISE means from the Websters dictionary?

Here is the definition: previous statement serving as the basis for an argument. Can anyone please specifically explain what this definition is implying? Thank you.Can someone clarify to me what this definition of PREMISE means from the Websters dictionary?
It's like a supporting reason based on past experience or facts. For example If someone asked you, "On what premise did you post this question on Yahoo Answers?" You might answer that you thought or hoped you would get a good answer because you have posted questions here before and got helpful answers.
Premise in this defintion; basically means the main basis for an argument. Let's say we're talking about religion, you think god exists I dont. Just for the sake of argument right. Well I explain my position that I don't think he exists, so when you retort saying "No Chris he DOES exists here's why!" Whatever I said is the premise for your argument as to why he does exist.

Simple example sure, but I think it clarifies the definition a bit.Can someone clarify to me what this definition of PREMISE means from the Websters dictionary?
It means the assumption you make about something being true or worthwhile. For example, Creationists have the premise that the universe was created by God (i.e. they believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible,) and base all their arguments on that assumption. Can someone clarify to me what this definition of PREMISE means from the Websters dictionary?
In logic, the basis of an argument is opinion based on fact. (You can't argue facts, only opinions.)

The premise lays out the basis of your argument.

    The classic form is:

Major premise: All men are mortal. (This is fact, obviously.)

Minor premise: Socrates is a man. (Also a fact.)

    Conclusion: Therefore, Socrates is mortal.

I breathed a sop into the air,

    It fell to easel, I knew not where;

For who has significance so keen and strong,

That it can follow the flight of sop?

Long, long afterward, in an obduracy

    I found the artichoke, still unbroke;

And the sop, from beginning to end,

I found again in the heath of a friend.

Words don't appear in a dictionary.

A dictionary is compiled and then published. Words in the book would have been added in a not entirely alphabetical order, but they would be printed in alphabetical order.

If you mean "what is the first word in the first edition of the Merriam-Webster dictionary?" I don't know the answer to that, but it probably started with the letter A.

If you want to know what the first word ever to be written with it's definition in the English language for a dictionary, I suggest you read up on Samuel Johnson.

Well, believe it or not, you may be able to find another copy of this dictionary available on line at Amazon.com. Here's what I would do:

Go to Amazon and search for Webster's Dictionary. I did that and got over 14,000; then clicked on Reference and next clicked on Dictionaries which got me to over 2,000. Next, you can sort according to publication date.

You might have an easier time checking for the price since you have the complete title (and maybe an editor's name). Older doesn't always translate into dollars - if there are a lot of copies or no one is collecting, it might not be worth much.

Also, I would say the yellowing is due to age.

Once you know what it's worth, then you can either sell it at auction such as eBay or if you have a high taxable income you can do better by finding a library or museum to accept it as a gift and give you a tax write-off.

If pages are turning yellow, beware - they may soon crumble. Paper used back then was not acid-free. Stanford University Library is treating its millions of old books to deal with this problem, but I don't know where you as an individual could get it done.

What century was the word "dirge" first used in? (Merriam Webster BOOK Dictionary only)?

I don't need the definition or anything, just the century "dirge" was first used in. And it NEEDS to be from the book. It is NOT on www.m-w.com.

Thanks. What century was the word "dirge" first used in? (Merriam Webster BOOK Dictionary only)?
dirge, first documented in c.1225, from L. dirige "direct!" imperative of dirigere "to direct," probably from antiphon Dirige, Domine, Deus meus, in conspectu tuo viam meam, "Direct, O Lord, my God, my way in thy sight," from Psalm v:9, which opened the Matins service in the Office of the Dead. Transferred sense of "any funeral song" is from 1500.What century was the word "dirge" first used in? (Merriam Webster BOOK Dictionary only)?

    Write it in yourself!
You have to get people to use it. Words exist because people give them their meaning. Otherwise, they will just be letters. If a reasonable amount of people started using the word flondiptic and gave it a meaning, the Websters Dictionary would have no choice but to include it and accepted as a word, because the people recognize this word while speaking/writing/expressing themselves.
Keep using it, until it 'Catches on'....lol...!!

Why does the Webster Dictionary keep printing the wrong meaning for the N_word?

From my understanding, and what most other black people I associate with have understanding of the definition to mean

N_word- 1)a non white person who is being subjected to white supremacy or 2) a person that is a prisoner to injustice.

The process of not being a N_word is called Deniggerization - meaning, the process of not being the subject of white supremacy.

So when someone says, YOUUUUUU N_word!!!!!!, I say well yes I am because I am infact being subjected to white supremacy ....simple as that. It is what it is.Why does the Webster Dictionary keep printing the wrong meaning for the N_word?
So you answered your own question.

or 2) a person that is a prisoner to injustice.- thats a little misleading as a white person could be a prisoner to injustice, recently a white south african claimed political asylum in canada because he was being racially abused and in fear of his life which is an injustice, but that doesn't make him the n word does it?Why does the Webster Dictionary keep printing the wrong meaning for the N_word?
Ah yes...the eternal victim. Oh lawdy my troubles so hard...oh lawdy my troubles so hard....don't nobody know my troubles but god....don't nobody know my troubles but god.

The plantation is closed,"massa" past away years ago , but still there you stand a slave craving the lash.

Truly the wretched of this earth you are....the eternal victim.
You can think what you want, but the N-word means what they say, not what you interpret it as.
I don't know what it means either I just know it's offensive so I don't use it

Since Obama and the Democratic Party fits the Webster definition of "Statist", why call them "Democrats"?

    STATISM:

concentration of economic controls and planning in the hands of a highly centralized government often extending to government ownership of industry

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionar鈥?/a>Since Obama and the Democratic Party fits the Webster definition of "Statist", why call them "Democrats"?
That's good! These liberals don't even want to call themselves liberals - I know, they're really socialists - "Progressive" is the new term since "Liberal" is looked at negatively!
Because that also fits the Republican party.Since Obama and the Democratic Party fits the Webster definition of "Statist", why call them "Democrats"?
you should not use such small words for libs, it is below them.Since Obama and the Democratic Party fits the Webster definition of "Statist", why call them "Democrats"?
How about calling them just plain outright communists. Seems logical to me when the Governmednt is ending up owning and controlling everything.
    because it sounds prettier.

but im not on republican side either. im what you might call a political party pooper. i don't trust the government or any politician... except ron paul and even ron paul is probably a puppet.

edit: i like your additional details.
Because then "statism" couldn't be used as a verb to describe Democrat politics.
because you are just making your own linkage of them to what you perceive because of your myopia.

A party is not defined by one issue and within any party there are many voices. To lump all the Dems with the socialists is just another attempt by GOP to demonize them because they are now losers. Wait another few years and the fickle populace will oust them and put GOP in power again. Whine Whine Whine.

    poor bass terds.

And actually, we live in a corporate fascist state. Look up the definition of fascism and associate the corporate interest and let's talk about the real ruler that keeps both parties in subservience to the dollar and institutional corruption that is inherent in both parties.
Justin I would say something demeaning and pithy to you but your name is weak, so there is no need.
    lol nice try, but nope.
The neo-conservative GOP fits the definition of Facism

    http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionar鈥?/a>
And since you're no stranger to stupid, needless, endless and tiresome lies, we'll call YOU a republican.
Check you facts and proof your thought. That definition doesn't fix

    Obama or the Democratic.
Learned a new word in school did we?
I think Statism has negative connotations like 'Socialism' or 'Communism', and represent a real concentration of state power that does not exist in the US. Although the US has a post office, for instance, it is privatized, and the budget comes from it's own sales.

We live in a mixed economy where private goods are by far made by the private sector.

Although some try to claim that Obama is a Statist or socialist for interfering in the Auto or Fiance industry, it is a ridiculous charge because he is doing these things only because the industry is on the verge of collapse due to a recession.
    http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2009鈥?/a>
Perhaps your reading skills are faulty. That doesn't fit the Obama and the Dems anymore than it fit Bush and the GOP.

Didn't the GOP already give up the dumb idea of renaming the Dems?
Another new name for the democrats. Boys you are going to have to pick one sooner or later and stick with it.*

Is there just as much proof for the Webster's Dictionary being the "Word of God" as there is for the Bible?

After all, whoever wrote the Webster's Dictionary knows the definition of EVERY English word that's in common use. If that isn't God-like, I don't know what is.Is there just as much proof for the Webster's Dictionary being the "Word of God" as there is for the Bible?
    Hotep,

You are so correct. Anyone telling you they have a book written by God, or is God's word, well they are full of fecal excrement. No god has ever written a book. Sometimes, very rarely we are able to tap into the Cosmic Source and have "divine" insight; most people call it the conscious, but it is our divine guidance.

I hope this is somewhat enlightening.

may you have peace, prosperity and longevity
Daniel Webster wrote down every word that he knew into the original dictionary. However, there are newly expanded editions every year because the English language evolves. Personally, I've found the thesaurus to be more effective than the dictionary. Is there just as much proof for the Webster's Dictionary being the "Word of God" as there is for the Bible?

    It's just AMAZING. PUDDIN HEAD.
    Hhahah your so right..

But like any other book, the bible is accurate and completely inaccurate on things

How much is a 1922 Webster's Dictionary worth?

We just bought a house. It is an older house, which my mom and I love. We're big on history. The house is two stories, but their was a door that was locked, blocking the stairs. We got it open, and went up. It was an unfinished attic, and we found a lot of things that seemed to have belonged to the original owners of the house. I found a bunch of books, so I flipped out. There was a Webster's Dictionary that said copyright 1922. It is in fair condition. There aren't any pages missing. The cover is a little warped, but intact. It is in great condition. Does anyone have any idea of what it could be worth? How much is a 1922 Webster's Dictionary worth?

Has the website merriam-webster.com the dictionary website been altered over the years or suffered changes?

im 33 and have windows xp pro on a custom built desktop i cant afford to upgrade to windows 7 yet.

im often concerned about the topic of government internet censorship and regulation and know that it is a big threat in this era.......and that most us ordinary people are powerless to really stop it....if you love a free internet domain.....like the way the net was around the years of 2001.

i enjoy the free dictionary websites like .merriam-webster.com , but as of late i was looking at the site...and in my estimation it looks like there is 'less ' information on the site or its been filtered or had part of its resources deleted?

i was concerned and thought ' oh no i hope that doesnt start to suffer internet alteration or restriction to '.

i just wondered is this me worrying or has the site changed? hoping for reassurance.Has the website merriam-webster.com the dictionary website been altered over the years or suffered changes?
Internet content manipulation and censorship is a very real threat. Some countries censor their visible internet for their citizens with intentions to better their living, this is a controversial topic and has been raising some worries.

There could be a number of reasons why the site seems to have less content though, some not-so-dramatic. They could be updating their archives and taking down old content to make room for new. They could have lost rights to some of their content. They could have met their data storage limit with their hosting company and needed to alleviate it.

I suggest finding a new site if you aren't happy with this one's preference anymore. The internet is a massive place, there's still plenty of free, uncensored, and independently run websites that offer many of the same services.

I hope this helps answer your question!Has the website merriam-webster.com the dictionary website been altered over the years or suffered changes?
You probably need professional help. I guess you're developing paranoid symptoms. I mean it.

I do indeed look it up in a dictionary, if it seems like slang I will use Urban Dictionary.
First, Dictionary.com, then if it sounds like a "modern" trashy word, I'll check it on Urban.
    What's a dictionary ?
i google " %26lt;word%26gt; meaning/ defination " then most of the times i get to urban dictionary.

What's the difference between Noah Webster and Samuel Johnson?

I thought Webster created the first dictionary? Did Samuel Johnson create the dictionary or did Webster created it? ConfusingWhat's the difference between Noah Webster and Samuel Johnson?
Neither one of them created the first dictionary, but Samuel Johnson created a dictionary before Noah Webster. The oldest known dictionaries were Akkadian empire cuneiform tablets with bilingual Sumerian鈥揂kkadian wordlists, discovered in Ebla (modern Syria) and dated roughly 2300 BC.

Samuel Johnson (18 September 1709 [O.S. 7 September] 鈥?13 December 1784), often referred to as Dr Johnson, was an English author who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Johnson was a devout Anglican and committed Tory, and has been described as "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history".[1] He is also the subject of "the most famous single work of biographical art in the whole of literature": James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson.[2]

Noah Webster (October 16, 1758 鈥?May 28, 1843) was an American lexicographer, textbook pioneer, English spelling reformer, political writer, editor, and prolific author. He has been called the "Father of American Scholarship and Education." His blue-backed speller books taught five generations of American children how to spell and read, and made their education more secular and less religious[citation needed]. His name became synonymous with "dictionary," especially the modern Merriam-Webster dictionary that was first published in 1828 as An American Dictionary of the English Language.

  • How do you cite multiple words from one dictionary in a works cited?

I know for one word it would be like

    “Government.” Websters Dictionary.(underlined) 2006

But what if I have multiple words from that dictionaryHow do you cite multiple words from one dictionary in a works cited?
Alas, you would NOT cite the entry as you have done it. I have provided below the form designated by the Modern Language Association (MLA). In the examples used below, I have created the requisite information. You would use the actual information.

MLA IN-TEXT PARENTHETICAL CITATION FOR DICTIONARY:

In your parenthetical citation, put the word that has been defined; and if the word has more than one definition listed in the source, also include the number of the definition that you used. Although I am unable to format using Yahoo! Answers, your parenthetical citation would include ("Government" Def. 2a). No page number is required, since readers can easily look up the word defined in your works cited. You would use this format for EACH of the words the definition of which you quote from the dictionary source.

    MLA WORKS CITED ENTRIES:

Assuming no author, EACH entry should be alphabetized in the list of works cited under the word the definition of which you used — NOT under the title of the reference work itself. Thus, the reader need only look for the word defined in your works cited to find the full citation. You should include not less than the following in your works cited entries: "Word defined." Title of Reference Work (in italics). Edition of Reference work. Date of the edition. Medium.

Although the following is not formatted, it provides the minimum information needed in each of your your works cited dictionary entries:

"Government." Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary (in italics). 1988. Print.

How do I write a sentence that includes a definition from a dictionary and the dictionaries name?

Okay so for my introduction i am using the definition of just and i started the sentence with: In websters dictionary the definition of just is... Do i write the name of the dictionary a certain way and do i cite it what so ever?

Thanks! How do I write a sentence that includes a definition from a dictionary and the dictionaries name?
It's sufficient to write "Webster's Dictionary defines 'just' as ..." and go from there. Maybe if it's a very formal paper you ought to footnote it, but the reference is obvious and should stand on its own in any but the most formal setting. Good luck. How do I write a sentence that includes a definition from a dictionary and the dictionaries name?
Indent it as a quotation, and add the reference:

Blah, blah, blah. The blah is blahed in the blah blah blah.

How Blah, is blah blah blah. My blah is blah.

    - The blah, blah blah

Get it?How do I write a sentence that includes a definition from a dictionary and the dictionaries name?
    Sentences like that typically begin:

    "Websters defines "word" as "defininition".

What, Since Websters Dictionary now includes the definition for marriage as the state of being united to a?

"the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage."

    Does that mean it's true?

If you need a link to this information, I will give it to you, just ask. What, Since Websters Dictionary now includes the definition for marriage as the state of being united to a?
    Hi Deb,

They changed the defintion to fit the popular belief of the times. All through time up until now it has been defined as being between a man and a woman.

Rom 1:26 "Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones.

Rom 1:27 "In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion."

Rom 1:28 "Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done."
Nope, the definition is in the bible. The dictionary is just to be PC about the situation. But marriage is a religious term anyways. The dictionary is wrong. What, Since Websters Dictionary now includes the definition for marriage as the state of being united to a?
    No.

Marriage was instituted in Paradise when man was in innocence (Gen. 2:18-24).

May I suggest Crudens exhaustive concordance with definitions and Halley's Bible Handbook for correct use and definitions of Biblical terminology. What, Since Websters Dictionary now includes the definition for marriage as the state of being united to a?
I think Daniel Webster is turning in his grave right now.

"Real goodness does not attach itself merely to this life; it points to another world" D.Webster.
Other people can believe what they want, as for me and mine we will stick with God's Dictionary, it was around alone time before Websters' and will be around long after Websters' is gone since it is the one that will least through eternity and Websters' is just going to burn up like the others.
This only shows that there is only one Word that is true and that is the Word of God. When they start changing the laws against believers we have to stick to one another and encourage one another to keep the faith. Websters is just showing us that we need to keep our faith and our beliefs separate from the world.

God Bless and keep the faith my dear one. :)
No it doesn't. The dictionary is no moral guide of any kind.
Not in the eyes of GOD is it true. that is what counts, not mankind's ideals.
The homosexuals and lesbians have gained considerable political and social momentum in America. They have "come out" as the term goes, left their closets, and are knocking on the doors of your homes. Through TV, Radio, Newspapers, and Magazines, they are preaching their doctrine of tolerance, equality, justice, and love. They do not want to be perceived as abnormal or dangerous. They want acceptance and they want you to welcome them with open, loving arms, approving of what they do.

In numerous states in America several bills have been introduced by the pro homosexual politicians to ensure that the practice of homosexuality is a right protected by law. Included in these bills are statements affecting employers, renters, and schools. Even churches would be required to hire a quota of homosexuals with "sensitivity" training courses to be "strongly urged" in various work places. There is even legislation that would make the state pick up the tab for the defense of homosexuality in lawsuits, while requiring the non homosexual side to pay out of his/her pocket.

The Christian church has not stood idle. When it has spoken out against this political immorality, the cry of "separation of church and state" is shouted at the "religious bigots." But when the homosexual community uses political power to control the church, no such cry of bigotry is heard. Political correctness says it is okay for the homosexual community to impose its will upon churches, but not the other way around. Apparently, it isn't politically correct to side with Christians.
